This acrylic paint, which is very rich in pigment, can be painted directly onto the plate, even a previously etched plate, before they are dried. As it dries, the acrylic will harden on the plate and become incredibly durable.
The plate is now ready for inking and printing. Where the coat of paint is thick, the print will be light; where it is thin, the print will be dark. The painted areas of the plate will also produce a relief print in the paper. This makes it possible to obtain many interesting effects by combining the techniques of intaglio (wiping and rolling, respectively) and relief printing in the application of etching inks. If you mix the paint with carborundum powder, you can get an aquatint-like effect.
By painting a thin paint solution (diluted with demineral­ised water) you can „close“ an aquatint that prints too dark, and the paint can be removed in a strong solution of soda and water
